Dear members of the campus community,
As many of you are aware, there was a report earlier today of an individual with a gun on campus in the vicinity of the Cesar E. Chavez Student Center and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union.
Fortunately, thanks to a swift response by members of the UCPD, we learned that the individual was from Loomis, an armored car company, and was making his usual rounds to campus vendors to collect cash deposits.

Our campus community will welcome about 8,500 new undergraduate students this fall. Move-In and Golden Bear Orientation (GBO) are coming in August. Campus and the neighboring streets will be a hub of activity as new students, and their families and supporters, learn their way around UC Berkeley.
In my message to campus last March about Cal Athletics, I wrote of our need to improve the training and competition facilities we provide to our women's softball and beach volleyball teams. With the initial analytical work completed, we recently presented preliminary plans for these projects to the Capital Projects Committee. Due to the significant costs associated with these facility improvements, I am writing to explain how we got here, and what needs to happen going forward.
