Staff Organization Spotlight: Asian Pacific American Systemwide Alliance (APASA)

May 1, 2023

Briefly explain what your Staff Organization does or its mission:

The mission of APASA is to promote the general welfare of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) staff, faculty, and students at UC Berkeley.

How does your Staff Organization benefit UC Berkeley staff?

We advocate for the AAPI community, promote inclusivity, provide the visibility of AAPI staff, offer leadership and professional development opportunities, create community-building and networking opportunities, and help to develop members' confidence in their intersectional identities.

How can UC Berkeley staff get involved with your Staff Organization?

There are many ways to get involved in APASA. One of the best ways is to subscribe to our newsletter to get information about events and programs. Another great way is to follow us on social media on Instagram, like us on Facebook, and connect with us on LinkedIn. You can also email us anytime to connect at apasa-admin@berkeley.edu.

In what kinds of events and/or outreach does your Staff Organization engage in?

We host an annual Lunar New Year celebration, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month events, and numerous other events such as mentorship groups, professional development panels, book discussions, community spaces, and more. We also offer scholarships to Berkeley staff to attend the Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE) conference. This semester, we are planning a number of community events and programs, including a halo-halo and merienda fundraiser and mixer with the Filipinx Faculty and Staff Association (FFSA) and a Book Swap with the Council of Ethnic Staff Organizations (CESO). The best way to find out about these events and more is to subscribe to our newsletter

What’s the best part of being in this Staff Organization?

Meeting AAPI staff from all across campus that I normally wouldn't have the opportunity to interact with and being part of such a welcoming, caring, and diverse community. It feels great to be involved in communities I care about and work to make an impact at Berkeley.

Name one thing you learned by being part of this Staff Organization?

That there is a wonderful network and community of AAPI staff and faculty at Cal, and how to be a more intentional part of uplifting and celebrating the AAPI community. I've been able to develop or enhance leadership skills and try new things as part of the staff organization.

What are your Staff Organization's current and future goals?

With the recent uptick and visibility of violence and harassment targeting Asian communities, our goals are to continue to support and celebrate AAPI communities; promote the well-being and professional development of AAPI staff and faculty; advocate for and visibilize the needs of the AAPI community on campus; and collaborate with our campus partners to create supportive spaces of belonging and thriving for all.
