Each month, we spotlight an organization at Berkeley. For this month, we are spotlighting LavenderCal, UC Berkeley's network for LGBTQ+ staff, faculty, postdocs, and visiting scholars. LavenderCal works to build community and belonging among all LGBTQ+ campus community members, recognizing the intersections of sexual orientation and gender identity with race, ethnicity, disability, class, age, faith, and culture. The organization advocates for inclusive policies through an intersectional and racial justice framework while providing professional development opportunities and fostering social engagement through collaboration with other identity-based organizations.

What makes LavenderCal special is their volunteer-driven approach to community building. All activities are free and sustained through dedicated volunteers who organize events, facilitate discussions, and create programming that serves the diverse facets of Cal's LGBTQ+ community. From their LavCal LitClub to networking events and advocacy work, they provide spaces for authentic connection and professional growth.

LavenderCal exemplifies the power of grassroots organizing, creating psychological safety for community members to be their authentic selves every day at UC Berkeley. Their commitment to continually assessing campus climate and confronting institutional barriers makes them essential advocates for equity and inclusion.
