Staff Organization Spotlight: Alianza

October 1, 2023

Briefly explain what your Staff Organization does or its mission:

The Alianza Staff Organization is committed to community building, professional development, and promotion of Latinx staff at UC Berkeley.

How does your Staff Organization benefit UC Berkeley staff?

Alianza enables community engagement and networking opportunities for UC Berkeley Chicanx/Latinx staff, highlighting relevant stories, opportunities, and resources to maintain a united community and help empower staff at all levels.

How can UC Berkeley staff get involved with your Staff Organization?

You can get involved by:

Joining our meetings: Alianza monthly meetings are held between 12:00–1:00 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of the month (currently online via Zoom). Meeting dates are available on our calendar.

Signing up for our newsletter: Our newsletter includes information about upcoming Alianza events as well as news about the campus, professional development opportunities, etc.

Submitting content for our newsletter: If you have something you believe is relevant and of interest to Alianza members, please fill out our content submission form.

Providing insights: Contact us if you would like to present on a career topic at a future Alianza general meeting.

In what kinds of events and/or outreach does your Staff Organization engage in?

Alianza hosts events and workshops based on what our members suggest during brainstorming sessions and surveys. We also highlight professional development and career opportunities in our bi-monthly newsletter. Alianza is proud to host the first annual Latinx Staff Award Ceremony on October 12, from 11:00 am–1:00 pm at the Alumni House.

What’s the best part of being in this Staff Organization?

Alianza offers the opportunity to connect with Latinx staff and other colleagues across campus that you otherwise would not meet.

Name one thing you learned by being part of this Staff Organization?

I've learned a great deal about campus-wide resources and initiatives impacting the Latinx community such as the Council of Ethnic Staff Organizations (CESO) and the Latinx Thriving initiatives.

What are your Staff Organization's current and future goals?

We want to be a place where Latinx staff can come to and find community, support, and feel acknowledged. We also want to collaborate with other staff organizations, and to ultimately continue to act as a resource on Chicanx/Latinx issues relating to campus policies, employment, and academic concerns.
