Dear Campus Community,

The smoke from the North Bay fires has caused our local air quality to worsen over the last several days, and it will likely stay poor through the weekend. To limit exposure indoors, University Health Services (UHS) is advising all building windows remain closed.

In addition, Facilities is assessing the operational impacts of shutting down air-handling units in buildings that have this capability. Where feasible, this action may be taken to reduce the amount of outside air that is being delivered.

Dear students, staff and faculty,

The smoke in the air here in Berkeley offers a hint of the tragedy unfolding just north of us. As you know, wildfires continue to burn, and the destruction has been extensive, affecting many on this campus. Friends and family members have been displaced, schools and colleges are closed, and homes and businesses have been lost.

I am writing to encourage our instructors and our managers and supervisors to be flexible with students and staff who are facing challenges related to the fires.

Dear Campus Community:

On Friday, Oct. 13, Cal will host Washington State in an ESPN-televised football game from California Memorial Stadium, and this note is intended to provide information on how traffic will be impacted and managed during the day.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The late start should lessen the overlap between the evening commute and fans arriving for the game, and thus ease the transition from a campus workday to a gameday atmosphere.

The University invites comments on the proposed revisions to PPSM 22 (Probationary Period). This policy is applicable to staff employees in the Professional & Support Staff.

The proposed revisions incorporate the probationary language of PPSM 61(Release During the Probationary Period or from Limited Casual/Restricted, and Floater Positions), remove common term definitions by including reference to PPSM 2 (Definitions), and update remaining definitions with PPSM 3 (Types of Appointment).

Dear students, staff, and faculty,

Like many of you, I am struggling to process the tragedy that unfolded Sunday evening in Las Vegas. The immense loss of life, the hundreds of injuries, the panic on the ground brought to life in video and audio recordings, the renewed acrimony about gun control, and the search for answers all weigh heavily. I extend my deepest condolences to those who may be connected to the victims of this terrible event.

Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to announce the implementation of CalNet 2-Step verification, now available to faculty and staff. CalNet 2-Step verification provides an important, additional layer of protection against the theft of your CalNet credentials. This extra layer is like adding an alarm system to protect your home beyond just your front door key. You have likely experienced 2-step verification with your other accounts like online banking or your personal Google login experience.

Dear campus community,

The past several weeks have been trying ones for Berkeley.

In demonstrating our firm commitment to the free speech protections of the First Amendment, this week we have seen speakers come to campus who brought with them ideas that run counter to our Principles of Community and to our belief in the fundamental value of every individual in our institution.
