Dear campus community,
I am delighted to let you know that plans are underway for an exciting series of events to celebrate 150 years of women at UC Berkeley. Tentatively called “150 Years of Berkeley Women,” this yearlong celebration will commemorate the resolution unanimously approved by the Board of Regents, on October 3rd, 1870:
I have appointed a task force of students, staff and faculty to develop a rich and diverse set of ideas for how to honor the remarkable women who have studied at, worked for, and contributed to UC Berkeley. More broadly, the 2020 celebration will honor gender diversity and inclusivity in our vibrant academic community, which includes men, women, non-binary, and trans people.
The task force, co-chaired by Sharon Inkelas and Oliver O'Reilly, has been meeting this spring to brainstorm ideas. Its members will also be soliciting ideas from the campus community. We invite you to submit ideas to the task force using this form. You can also contact individual task force members (see names below) if you have ideas you want to discuss with them.
In May, the task force will consolidate the ideas it has received and recommend a plan of action for the campus. I’m looking forward to hearing what I know will be a wide range of exciting ideas from the campus community that will inspire our celebration of the many distinguished alumni, students, staff, faculty, friends and donors who have enriched our world.
Thank you to the members of the task force:
