UCPD Captain Alex Yao named Chief of Police at UCSB

September 16, 2020

 Vice Chancellor, Administration

Dear colleagues:

I am delighted (and also admittedly a bit saddened) to announce that our friend and valued colleague, UCPD Captain Alex Yao, has been appointed UC Santa Barbara’s new Chief of Police. Alex will begin his new role there later this semester.

Alex has spent almost his entire 28-year career at UC Berkeley. He began his career in public safety as an undergraduate at Berkeley, serving as a Cal Watch Volunteer and a student Community Service Officer. After graduating, he continued serving the University and over the course of his career became the second-highest ranking officer at UCPD. Alex is well known for working closely and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community stakeholders to build partnerships that have strengthened UCPD's relationship with the community.

Although Alex will be greatly missed on the Berkeley campus, we are proud that his skills and expertise were recognized with this well-deserved appointment and that he will remain in the UC system. We are deeply grateful for his service and for the legacy he leaves behind.

Please join me in congratulating Captain Alex Yao and extending best wishes for success and happiness in his new role at UC Santa Barbara.

Sincerely,

Marc Fisher
Vice Chancellor, Administration
