Start planning now for Cal Day 2018

January 3, 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Planning is underway for Cal Day 2018, our annual campuswide open house showcasing the best of Berkeley for thousands of newly admitted students – many of whom choose to attend Berkeley as a result of this experience – as well as their families and other visitors. We invite your department or unit to begin considering how you will take part. Cal Day will take place on Saturday, April 21st, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

During the day, admission is free to the Lawrence Hall of Science and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology, as well as to a variety of athletic events. Visitors can also attend talks given by some of our most distinguished faculty, visit labs, see classrooms, and explore museums and collections rarely open to the public.

We urge every campus department and unit to begin now to make a plan to participate. Units might host a single event or lecture, staff a table at the Information Marketplace, or create more extensive activities to engage admitted students and the public. Our academic departments in particular should be broadly represented to help attract prospective students.

A sampling of last year's events can be found online at calday.berkeley.edu. For departments that host alumni days or special events during the year, we encourage you to consider scheduling these on Cal Day to create more opportunities for visitors on that day. This year the Cal Day theme – 150 Years of Light – will celebrate the university's sesquicentennial anniversary.

If your department would like to participate, please contact La Dawn Duvall at calday@berkeley.eduWe encourage you to appoint a representative to attend a Cal Day orientation meeting for new and returning coordinators on Monday, January 22nd, from 10:30-12pm in 103A Sproul Hall

Thank you for your efforts to showcase Berkeley’s excellence in this popular and important event.

Sincerely,

Diana Harvey

Associate Vice Chancellor for Communications & Public Affairs
