Dear Campus Community -

University Health Services (UHS), with guidance from the University of California Office of the President, has updated the Smoke and Tobacco-Free Campus Policy as of January 1, 2020.

UC Berkeley has been a smoke and tobacco-free environment since January 1, 2014 and this amended policy expands the scope that prohibits the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, snuff, snus, water pipes, pipes, hookahs, chews, unregulated electronic nicotine delivery systems, and any other non-combustible tobacco products at all indoor and outdoor spaces owned or leased by UC Berkeley.

The aim of having a Smoke and Tobacco-Free Campus Policy is to:

  • Create a healthier environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors;

  • Support tobacco and cannabis users who are trying to quit; and

  • Promote the social norm of a smoke and tobacco-free environment.

An important part of having this campus policy is making available the resources to support those that are seeking help to quit smoking.  Resources can be found at Get Help to Quit as well as health information about cannabis

The student group, Breathe at Berkeley, is also helping to advance the tobacco prevention program on campus by creating and adapting strategies to the changing trends of tobacco usage by students.

With the roll-out of the updated Smoke and Tobacco-Free Campus Policy, it is also important to reinforce the information we are learning about the dangers of vaping and have provided some additional information on this e-cigarette fact sheet

For any questions please feel free to reach out to: tobaccofree@berkeley.edu or visit tobaccofree.berkeley.edu

Thank you for your participation in making our campus a healthier environment.

Sincerely,
Guy Nicolette, M.D., CAQSM
Assistant Vice Chancellor
University Health Services
