Reminder: Move-In & Golden Bear Orientation

July 9, 2019

 Student Affairs

Dear colleagues -

Move-In and Golden Bear Orientation (GBO) are coming in August! During that time, our campus community will welcome about 9,000 new undergraduate students. Campus and the neighboring streets will be a hub of activity as new students, and their families and supporters, find their way around UC Berkeley.

GBO has been a great success largely because faculty and staff have provided a warm and welcoming environment. We hope you will consider getting involved this fall — you will help shape the Berkeley experience for new undergraduates. There are many ways to contribute, from helping students check in to ushering at the convocation.  Sign up to volunteer!

Save the Date
For more information about Golden Bear Orientation 2019, its events, and volunteer details, we invite you to attend the New Student Services Campus Partners Meeting for All Faculty and Staff on August 7, from 2–3:30 p.m. in LeConte 1.

Parking on Move-In Day, Tuesday, August 20
To ease congestion on August 20, campus leadership is asking department chairs and managers to:

  • Review their business for that day and offer staff alternatives to traveling to campus, such as telecommuting or approving requested vacation days.

  • Consider holding meetings, retreats, and other activities off-site that day.

If you need to be on campus that day, please note the following:

  • Bike, walk, or take public transit, if possible.

  • Campus parking will be extremely limited in most cases.

  • Parking and Transportation will send an email this summer with more detailed information on parking during Move-In to current permit holders.

  • If you must drive to campus, factor in additional traffic congestion and commuting time (for example, thirty additional minutes each way) and be prepared to park in alternative lots away from campus, including public pay lots.

During the week of GBO, August 20–27, large groups of students will be walking around campus. Here’s a peek at what the week looks like for these students as they transition into Golden Bear life: GBO sample schedules.

We also encourage you to print this poster and display it in your offices, halls, or bulletin boards to add an extra warm welcome to our incoming students.

If you’d like more information, please review the GBO FAQs for Faculty and Staff, contact New Student Services at nss@berkeley.edu, or visit the Golden Bear Orientation website. For key new student dates, see our Dates & Deadlines page

Thank you for your ongoing support of our incoming undergraduate students.

Sincerely,

Catherine P. Koshland, Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education

Stephen C. Sutton, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
