Reimagining IT: CalNet 2-Step

October 10, 2017

Colleagues,

As many of you may know, the CalNet 2-Step project is one of the Reimagining IT tactics in support of Strategy 2, Service Efficiency, which has a goal of maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of IT security, infrastructure, enterprise systems, administrative tools, and user support. The 2-Step project seeks to do this by offering the campus a much needed two-step verification service to improve the security of our data and systems. This project is just one of many in support of our Reimagining IT Strategic Plan. Be sure to join us at our Open Seminar this Thursday, Oct. 12, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in Sibley Auditorium where you will hear about additional progress being made on other tactics outlined in the plan.

Since October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we are using this year’s campaign to encourage faculty, staff and affiliates to take advantage of the new CalNet 2-Step service. The service helps protect your CalNet account even if your password is stolen and adds a second verification step after you type in your username and password, typically using a device like a smartphone or tablet. The second step can be as simple as a tap on your phone, your tablet, or your watch!

Last week, we sent a campus-wide invitation to all faculty and staff to sign up for CalNet 2-Step. The launch of this service to faculty and staff marks the end of the first phase of the project, which built out the infrastructure to operate the 2-Step service and facilitate enrollment. The second phase of the project will open the service to students and alumni and extend 2-Step protection to other campus services that do not use CAS. Over the next few months, we will begin requiring faculty and staff to use CalNet 2-Step, so this is a great opportunity for you to get an early start and help us enroll as many people as possible.

Sign Up Today

The CalNet team will be available at the You’re IT: One IT Staff Appreciation event coming up later this month on Thursday, Oct. 26, 3 - 5 p.m. to help you get signed up for 2-Step, be sure to RSVP by Oct. 20.
