New Campus Workplace Safety Policy and Training Requirement

April 29, 2019

Office of Environment, Health & Safety

Dear Campus Community,

Safety in the workplace is important for all UC Berkeley employees–including faculty, staff and paid students/trainees of all appointment types. That is why I am pleased to announce a new campuswide Workplace Safety Policy and Program to help reduce illness and injury.

Central to the Program is a brief online training course. This one-time mandatory training for all campus employees provides valuable information on responsibilities, work-related injuries and illnesses, analyzing hazards and applying controls, what to do in a campus emergency, and resources available to you. The course meets State regulatory requirements and should take about 20 minutes to complete.

This new Workplace Safety Program eliminates the campus r equirement for departmental injury and illness prevention programs (IIPP). In some cases, specialized department, building, and lab-specific safety procedures will continue to be used to supplement the campuswide content. Please contact your Department Safety Coordinator or visit ehs.berkeley.edu for more information.

ACTION: All employees must complete the EHS 502 Workplace Safety Program training through the UC Learning Center portal. Supervisors will be supported with guidance on how to track their team’s compliance with this training requirement. If you need assistance with the training, please contact ehstrain@berkeley.edu.

We are all responsible for safety. Thank you in advance for taking the training to learn about our campus safety programs, and for helping us to reduce campus injury and illness.

Best Regards,

Patrick Goff, Executive Director
Office of Environment, Health and Safety
