Invitation to comment: UC Presidential Policy on Integrated Pest Management

November 23, 2021

 Administration

The University of California Office of the President invites review and comments on a proposed Presidential Policy on Integrated Pest Management (“IPM”).

The issuance of the Integrated Pest Management (“IPM”) policy intends to establish the University of California’s requirements for the implementation of an IPM Program at every UC location as recommended by the UC Herbicide Task Force created by former President Napolitano with support from the Regents, including:

  • identification of local and systemwide oversight structures and responsibilities for the IPM Programs;
  • creation and maintenance of a systemwide Pesticide Hazard Tiering System and a systemwide Pesticide Hazard Tier List;
  • integration of a systemwide Pesticide Use Authorization software by every UC location;
  • establishment of certification / licensing requirements for Pesticide Handlers, Applicators, and their supervisors.

Exemptions to the proposed policy include the use of pesticides in research, the use of antimicrobials for hygienic purposes (e.g., disinfecting sprays or wipes, pool treatments, and drinking water treatments), and the use of chemicals for the purpose of sterilizing medical products or equipment.

All members of the UC Berkeley campus community are invited to read the policy and submit comments, questions, and suggestions using this comment form by January 10, 2022. The policy and comment form can also be found on the Vice Chancellor of Administration website.

This message was sent to faculty, graduate student instructors and researchers, and staff. Please forward to other interested parties. If you are a manager who supervises UC Berkeley employees without email access, please circulate this information to all.
