Environmental Protection at UC Berkeley

December 11, 2018

Office of Environment, Health & Safety

Dear campus community,

As part of UC Berkeley’s commitment to protecting human health and the environment, and in line with a new California State Water Resources Control Board mandate, the Office of Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) recently updated the Environmental Enforcement on Campus Property policy. Under this policy, Berkeley willconduct investigations into any environmental discharge on campus and take appropriate corrective actions.

The policy, along with the related Environmental Enforcement Code and associated regulations, can be found at this link. The policy took effect on October 29, 2018 and replaces our campus’ 2004 Water Protection Policy.

There is no doubt that our environment is under enormous stress. The new policy and code were written not only to comply with regulations, but also to go beyond them to help address that stress. I hope you will take the time to read the policy and code and do your part to protect the environment.

If you are aware of any environmental release on UC Berkeley property - such as chemicals in a drain, the creek, dumpsters, or grounds, or a sewage overflow - please report it to EH&S by calling (510) 642-3073 or providing information online at: https://ehs.berkeley.edu/how-do-i-report-something-bad

If you have questions related to this policy, please contact the Environment, Health, and Safety Associate Director Greg Haet at: gjhaet@berkeley.edu or by calling (510) 642-4848. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Patrick T. Goff, P.E.
Executive Director
Office of Environment, Health & Safety
