Sent on behalf of the Energy Office, Facilities Services

The Facilities Services Energy Office, in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability, has updated the Energy Use Policy as of November 1, 2020.

UC Berkeley has an enduring commitment to energy efficiency, clean energy, carbon emission reduction, green building, and sustainable design principles. Enacted in 2014, the policy provides guidance on how UC Berkeley manages its operations so that energy resources are used in the most sustainable manner possible while providing a safe and comfortable environment for teaching, research, and public service. The amended policy includes substantial updates to support the campus’ advancing programs for energy efficiency. The campus Energy Use Policy revisions clarify and  deepen energy efficiency opportunities in projects and align with Campus Building Department categories. There is also an expanded section on IT virtualization & centralization to improve efficiency and safety of both new and existing server locations.

The Energy Use Policy provides a UC Berkeley-specific framework to support energy and carbon-efficient decisions in accordance with the University of California Sustainable Practices Policy, UC Berkeley campus Long Range Development Plan and Environmental Impact Report (LRDP/EIR), Campus Master Plan, and Climate Action Plan. Implementation of this policy engages cross-department collaboration and communication to help achieve the most energy efficient and cost-effective use of energy across the campus. Primary Facilities Services offices responsible for the implementation of this policy are the Energy Office, Building Department, and Maintenance Operations as well as our partners in Capital Projects.

For any questions, please reach out to: energyoffice@berkeley.edu or visit the Energy Office.

Thank you for your participation in building a better campus and bending the carbon emissions curve.

Sincerely,

Sally McGarrahan
Associate Vice Chancellor
