To our campus community,

This October, UC Berkeley is once again joining other universities, the National Cyber Security Alliance, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to help raise cyber security awareness during National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM).

The goal of NCSAM is to ensure that everyone has the resources they need to be safer and more secure online. Berkeley is proud to support this far-reaching online safety awareness and education initiative and we are committed to supporting each of you to #BeCyberSmart.

This year's NCSAM theme is Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.

Own IT.

  • Never click and tell: staying safe on social media.
  • Update your privacy settings.
  • Keep tabs on your apps: best practices for device applications.

Secure IT.

  • Shake up your passphrase protocol: create strong, unique passphrases.
  • Double your login protection: turn on multi-factor authentication.
  • Shop safe online.
  • Play hard to get with strangers: how to spot and avoid phish.

Protect IT.

  • If you connect, you must protect: updating to the latest security software, web browser and operating systems. Reminder: Windows 7 users must upgrade by the end of the year!
  • Stay protected while connected: Wi-Fi safety.
  • If you collect it, protect it: keeping customer/consumer data and information safe.

Paying attention to cyber security threats is more important than ever, and we each have a role in keeping our community and ourselves safe and secure online. We appreciate your efforts in becoming a cyber security champion, sharing your knowledge with others, and participating in NCSAM.

Regards,

Larry Conrad, Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and Chief Information OfficerJeremy Rosenberg, Chief Information Security Officer
