Conversation on the Future of Creativity in Higher Education

November 29, 2018

 Division of Undergraduate Education

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of Arts + Design Initiative (A+D) invites you to attend an exciting event next week:

Branches of the Same Tree: The National Academies on the Role of the Humanities and the Arts in “STEM/M”
Monday, December 3 | 6:30 to 8:00 pm
Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) | Osher Theater

Hosted by A+D’s ongoing public lecture series Arts + Design Mondays, this bold and imaginative conversation will contemplate the future of creativity in higher education and the future of Discovery at UC Berkeley. For this conversation, I will be joined by Paul Alivisatos, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost; Randy Katz, Vice Chancellor for Research; together with Tom Rudin and Irene Ngun from the Board on Higher Education and Workforce (BHEW at NASEM). The event will be moderated by Shannon Jackson, Associate Vice Chancellor for Arts + Design.

This roundtable discussion will respond to a seminal report on the necessary role of the arts, design, and the humanities in the future of work and in the future of STEM/M higher education. Commissioned by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the report argues that a 21st century workplace needs graduates who have capacities for critical thinking, flexibility, empathy, creative problem solving, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and a tolerance for ambiguity. Many of the aspirations and examples in the report echo UC Berkeley’s aspirations for the future of Discovery in our Campus Strategic Plan.

This event is free and open to the public. If you would like to attend, please reserve your seat. For special accommodations or questions about the event, contact info.artsdesign@berkeley.edu. If you plan to attend, join us early for an end-of-semester celebration and student showcase starting at 5:00 pm.

To learn more about A+D, we invite you to explore the rich Berkeley Arts + Design website, which includes events, programs, and tools, including a Student Resources section that features creative opportunities for students.

Sincerely,

Catherine P. Koshland
Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education
