Dear campus -
Please join me in congratulating Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students, Joseph Defraine Greenwell, EdD, who has accepted the position of Vice President for Student Affairs at Columbia University in New York City. This is a newly-created position at Columbia and Joseph will have an opportunity to help create, support and implement university-wide student services and resources. August 2, 2019, will be his last day at UC Berkeley.
While this is a loss for us, Joseph will bring his strong leadership and empathetic approach to his new position, and we couldn’t be more delighted for him. On behalf of the entire campus, I would like to thank Joseph for his dedication to our students during his leadership here at Berkeley. A cornerstone of his philosophy was to personally engage with students and he collaborated with the entire campus community to provide a holistic undergraduate and graduate student experience.
Serving as Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students since 2014, Joseph provided invaluable support on issues such as student wellness and mental well-being, campus climate, sexual violence and sexual harassment, and organizational changes. Joseph oversaw a portfolio of key student services, including the ASUC Student Union, the Center for Support and Intervention, the Center for Student Conduct, the Career Center, and the Public Service Center, among others. Importantly, he supported our student community through matters involving deaths, campus protests, and community safety.
We are finalizing interim leadership plans for the Dean of Students office and will share those soon. In the meantime, please join me in thanking Joseph for his contributions and wishing him well as he joins the team at Columbia University.
Go Bears!
Sincerely,
Stephen C. Sutton, EdD
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
