Census Update - Gender, Race, Ethnicity and other Demographics + New online course: Transgender & Nonbinary Awareness

March 3, 2020

 Human Resources

Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to take advantage of two opportunities to participate as the campus continues on a path to being more inclusive of all genders. We encourage you to update your demographic information in UCPath and take a new online course in gender awareness training.

The first of these will only take a minute to update your demographic information, e.g. race/ethnicity/gender, in UCPath, which features more options for self-identification than before. So, even if you provided this information when you were hired, now would be a great time to check and update it if necessary. You always have the right to decline to submit this information, but it's very useful to us if you do choose to supply it. We use the data (in aggregate only) to help understand our campus population and justify the creation of policies and programs in support of an equitable and inclusive campus environment. Additionally, as a federal contractor, we're required to collect gender and race/ethnicity data on all employees. We understand that the questions and response categories required by the U.S. Department of Labor are not satisfying to everyone, but we'd appreciate you taking a minute to select the categories that most closely match.

We're doing this because California has now fully implemented the 'California Gender Recognition Act, SB179,' and employees now have access to identifying within the nonbinary gender category on UCPath to the same extent it is available on California birth certificates, drivers' licenses, identity cards, and gender-change court orders. This act promotes greater community inclusivity and legal recognition.

If you have any questions, please visit UCPath and click on 'Ask UCPath Center' in the upper right-hand corner to submit an inquiry. You can also call the UCPath Center at (855) 982-7284 to speak with an associate.

Lastly, but also very importantly, we want to draw your attention to a new SB179 - Gender Recognition Act training course now available through the Learning Management System. This new online training on transgender, nonbinary, and intersex awareness is now available to all via our Learning Management System. We encourage you all to take it.

Thank you,

Eugene & Billy
