The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for the position of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics will function in the highly complex and competitive environment of an NCAA Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision) athletics program within the Pac-12, a conference built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance. Cal has a rich and storied athletics tradition. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics supports one of the most broad-based programs in the country with over 850 student-athletes participating in 30 men’s and women’s varsity sports and is part of an institution that strives for comprehensive excellence.

Reporting to the Chancellor, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics will be expected to guide and mentor coaches and other staff of approximately 270 professionals, with an emphasis on open conversation, strong collaboration, and an unwavering focus on the best interests of students. The Director will be the department’s key representative in interactions with other leaders on campus and will be responsible for building strong relationships with all campus constituencies. In this role, the Director not only will articulate the department’s vision, strategy and contributions to the University’s success, but also will listen carefully to the perspectives of faculty, students and staff to identify opportunities to partner in ways that improve the overall student experience. The Director will be responsible for ensuring the financial sustainability of the department, including managing the annual budget of approximately $100 million, implementing innovative revenu e generation strategies, and leading fundraising efforts to secure additional resources to support the department’s strategic plan and financial goals.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding and commitment to the spirit of Division I athletics and the student experience. Berkeley student-athletes compete at the highest levels of excellence, in a context where academic and athletic experiences are fully integrated into the life of the campus as a whole. The candidate will also have an extensive track record of successfully generating revenue through philanthropy. Finally, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics will be expected to embrace and advance the department’s mission and to promote the principles of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, inclusion and gender equity.
