Reclaiming and Re-purposing plastic “waste” from 3D-printing

With the growing innovations and applications of 3D-printing on campus, we create a surge of plastic waste weighing 600 pounds each year. To address this problem, Nicole Panditi and Scott Silva led the 3D Printer Filament Reclamation Project in which they take used 3D printer plastic, grind it up, melt it down and produce a new spool of plastic that can be used again in the campus’s 3D printers.

Classroom experience in “Objects and Commodities”: students learning to live without plastics

Professor Minoo Moallem challenged her students to avoid using plastic for 24 hours in her class, in order to raise her students’ awareness on how reliant we all are on plastics. She also expressed,“Plastic is so much a part of who we are,” she says. “Students came to realize that they can make tiny changes to damage the environment less. When our relationship with plastic changes, then our relationship with the environment will change.”
