Dear campus community,
We are very pleased to announce that Professor Tsu-Jae King Liu, who is currently concluding her term as Vice Provost for Academic and Space Planning, has been named the next dean of the College of Engineering (CoE). She will assume her new position on July 1, 2018.
A member of Berkeley’s electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty since 1996, Tsu-Jae has served CoE in a variety of roles including associate dean for research from 2008 to 2012, associate chair and then chair of EECS from 2012 to 2016, and associate dean for academic planning and development in 2016. In all of these leadership positions, she has maintained a steadfast commitment to excellence in teaching, to the discovery of new knowledge and the commercialization of technologies that improve our world, and to broadening access to the engineering disciplines for women and underrepresented minorities.
In her most recent role as the head of academic and space planning, Tsu-Jae engaged department chairs, deans, and Academic Senate leaders in a push to streamline the academic program review process, led efforts to find and fund creative solutions to our myriad space challenges, and helped the campus coordinate and forge new and important international partnerships.
Beyond her record as an administrator, Tsu-Jae is a celebrated teacher as well as a renowned researcher and entrepreneur. Her contributions to the field of integrated-circuit technology have helped enable the continual miniaturization of transistors over the past several decades, a development that has in turn allowed the electronics industry to create cheaper and more efficient laptops, cell phones, and other devices. She has been awarded many honors for her work, including the Semiconductor Industry Association’s University Research Award, and is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Over the years, she has built strong ties to Silicon Valley and internationally; such ties have already proven to be beneficial to the campus in terms of funding and valuable collaborations.
Before coming to Berkeley, Tsu-Jae was a researcher at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
Tsu-Jae’s appointment comes at the end of an extensive search process, and we would like to thank the search committee chair, Dean Douglas Clark, the entire search committee, and everyone in the College of Engineering community who was involved in the search for a new leader. We also would like to extend our deepest thanks to Shankar Sastry, CoE’s outgoing dean, who will be returning to his full-time faculty position after 11 years of outstanding service to our community.
