Sent on Behalf of the Office of the Vice Provost for the Faculty

Sent to all faculty and staff

Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sharon Inkelas as Berkeley’s next Associate Vice Provost for the Faculty (AVPF), effective July 1, 2020.

Professor Inkelas joined the Berkeley faculty in 1992. As one of the world's leading specialists on the relationship between sound systems and word structure, Sharon’s research ranges from grammatical patterns to child language learning. She currently serves as the Special Advisor to the Chancellor on SVSH and was a member of the Chancellor’s Senate/Administration Committee on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment in 2016. She has also served on the campus and systemwide Academic Senate Privilege and Tenure Committees as well as on the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects. After chairing the department of Linguistics for eight years, she served for two years as the faculty lead for new department chairs training.

The Associate Vice Provost for the Faculty is a critical leadership position on the Berkeley campus, providing support and oversight in the areas of academic recruitment, faculty advancement, faculty equity, faculty welfare, and matters pertaining to retirement. The AVPF is among the campus’s principal leaders in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, empowered to be a transformative leader with regard to the campus and University’s efforts in these areas.

In addition to taking on the AVPF role, Sharon will continue serving as the Special Advisor to the Chancellor on SVSH. I am impressed with her synergistic vision for bringing these roles together and am confident that the campus will benefit greatly from her experience training and leading faculty, and  helping us address some of our most sensitive and high-profile issues.

I would like to thank Angy Stacy, our current Associate Vice Provost for the Faculty, for her myriad accomplishments and dedication to improving faculty welfare at Berkeley over nearly twenty years in this role. She has assisted countless faculty and academic leaders with untangling their most difficult issues, and has helped ensure that the campus keeps striving towards achieving our diversity, equity, and inclusion goals through innovative programs, progressive policies, and culture change. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the search committee (see https://vpf.berkeley.edu/search-announcement-associate-vice-provost-faculty for a list of members) for their work, valuable feedback, and advice that they provided throughout the search process.

Please join me in welcoming Sharon to her new role. We look forward to her contributions and leadership.

Regards,

Benjamin HermalinVice Provost for the Faculty
