Announcement: Assistant Vice Chancellor - Research Administration and Compliance

June 23, 2020

Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research

This message is being sent to all faculty and staff.

Dear Colleagues:

It is with mixed emotions, and deep appreciation for his contributions to the university, that we announce the retirement of Patrick Schlesinger, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Administration and Compliance, effective June 29, 2020.

Pat began his UC career at the Office of the General Counsel in Oakland in 1996, and then served as the UC system’s first Director of Research Compliance before coming to UC Berkeley in 2008.

Since his arrival in Berkeley, Pat has been an integral part of our campus research community, working closely with the Vice Chancellor and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, as well as senior leadership, campus administrative units, deans, chairs, and individual faculty to advise and consult on a broad range of regulatory, compliance, and sponsored research topics. In partnership with the Vice Chancellor for Research, he has played a critical leadership role for our campus research ethics and compliance functions, including providing oversight of the Sponsored Projects Office, the Office for Protection of Human Subjects, the Office of Animal Care and Use, the RAC Information Technology unit, and the units supporting Research Conflict of Interest, Export Control, and Responsible Conduct of Research.

Pat has also played an integral role in advising the Vice Chancellor for Research Office and other campus units with his expertise on international partnerships, and in his efforts on campus and UC system policy development. His deep legal expertise, keen analytical mind, and good humor have been invaluable in helping the university to successfully pursue numerous large-scale opportunities and also in resolving some challenging situations.

Research compliance, effective contract and grant administration, and development of fair and ethical policy are critical functions for the university and the VC Research Office is launching a national search for Pat’s replacement. In the meantime, we are pleased to announce that Pamela Miller, Executive Director of the Sponsored Projects Office, has agreed to serve as Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Administration and Compliance (RAC) as of July 1, 2020. Pat and Pam have been actively engaged in planning to ensure a smooth transition for all RAC functions. For questions regarding the search for the AVC RAC position, please contact People & Culture Executive Recruiter James Kao.

Please join us in thanking Pat for his commitment, dedication, and service to the campus, and in welcoming Pam to her new role.

Sincerely,

Linda Haverty Rugg
Associate Vice Chancellor for Research

Randy Howard Katz
Vice Chancellor for Research
