Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

Statement of purpose

The Berkeley Staff Assembly strives to eradicate structures, policies, and environments within our organization and programs that replicate injustice. It seeks to highlight and partner with groups and individuals working to uphold our principles of communities, especially those fostering transformative justice.

Definitions

Diversity:

Diversity is a core set of values that includes equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice. UC Berkeley must respect and appreciate differences in diversity of thought, age, gender, ethnicity, education, physical abilities, race, and religion among individuals.

Employees must be empowered as individuals and trusted to make the decisions that are in the best interest of the institution.

Equity:

The guarantee of fair treatment, pay, access, opportunity, and advancement for staff in every stage of career development, while at the same time continuing to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented full participation of marginalized groups.

Inclusion:

The act of creating environments in which any individual or groups will feel welcomed, respected, recognized, supported, and valued. This includes being empowered to speak up at any given time.

Belonging:

When you can be your authentic self at work without feeling a sense of being othered. Co-creating bridges and spaces where people experience being heard, being seen, and being cared for. This includes being empowered to speak up at any given time.

Justice:

Process of changing the structural issues to obtain equity. Recognizing our own privilege and using that influence to right the wrongs of historic oppression by actively removing barriers to provide equitable treatment for all.

Anti-racism:

The active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices and attitudes, so that power is redistributed and shared equitably.
