Dear Faculty and Staff -
Over the last few years, you may have become acquainted with the Mental Health Handbook and the Gold Folder, two tools to assist faculty and staff in helping someone in distress. One component of that help is understanding when a student may be in danger of suicide. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) would like to offer you unique trainings specifically to support students who may be thinking about suicide.
SUICIDE AWARENESS TRAINING
This training, an introductory overview, will use a scenario, lecture and discussion to help you understand the warning signs and risk factors associated with thoughts of suicide. You will learn ways to approach and talk to a student about your concerns, including how to ask a question about suicide. Lastly you will learn the resources and how to make appropriate referrals.
The 1 hour and 15 minute training offered by Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is specifically for UC Berkeley Faculty and Staff and will be held at the University Health Services. Space is limited so please register quickly.

SUICIDE AWARENESS TRAINING - ADVANCED EDUCATION
This training is a pilot meant to be a follow up to the initial Suicide Awareness and Intervention Education. Only those who have taken the initial training offered this semester and last year, or have taken previous Question, Persuade and Refer courses should sign up for this training. The training will take already learned material and expand on how to support a person who is in crisis and thinking about suicide. The training will be case study based.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID (PFA)
When tragic events happen in our UC Berkeley community our faculty and staff are often called upon to offer support to students impacted. This 1 hour and 30 minute course will help you to learn the basic skills necessary to provide common sense support after a tragedy, such as a student death. The course will also address CAPS response and how faculty and staff can collaborate with the Tang Center. This course is being offered as a way to help increase the support campus provides in the aftermath of a tragedy and help the community begin to heal.
