Take a Moment and Celebrate Veterans Day

November 10, 2021

 Division of Equity & Inclusion

Dear UC Berkeley Community,

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, a time for us to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Many UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff, and alumni are affiliated with the military and share the same commitment to public service and excellence that we hold true as a campus community.

To mark the occasion, the Cal Veteran Services Center will host a Veterans Day Celebration and Art Gallery with the Cal Veterans Group on Saturday, Nov. 13. The event will be held at Wurster Hall Platform Artspace at 12:00 p.m. (please RSVP). Enjoy food, games, art, and company as we honor our veteran community and their diverse experiences that make our UC Berkeley family great.

The Cal Veteran Services Center at UC Berkeley expands access and empowers veteran and military-connected student engagement for life at Berkeley and beyond. They increase student veteran enrollment, support academic and co-curricular experiences, and facilitate preparation for goals beyond graduation. Their work engages individuals and the broader community to facilitate a transformational higher education experience for 600+ veterans and military-connected students.

UC Berkeley’s Veterans Benefits unit in the Office of the Registrar provides veterans and their dependents with the information and assistance required to seamlessly receive veterans’ educational benefits while pursuing their academic careers. The unit serves as a liaison between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Berkeley students eligible for federal veterans’ educational benefits and assists students eligible for the California Department of Veterans Affairs College Fee Waiver (Cal Vet) program. The University of California also has a list of resources available for veterans.

The Berkeley Veterans Staff Organization serves veterans at UC Berkeley and the surrounding communities and bridges the military and veterans community and the broader campus. They strive to support recruiting initiatives in the military and veterans community, outreach projects targeted to the local veterans’ community, campus service projects, and mentoring of new or potential veterans in the campus community. They work in tandem with other local veterans organizations.

First celebrated in 1919 as Armistice Day, it coincides with Remembrance Day that is celebrated in other countries and marks the end of World War I. Veterans Day differs from Memorial Day as it celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service. Another military holiday in May, Armed Forces Day celebrates those currently serving in the U.S. military. Women Veterans Day is also recognized by a growing number of U.S. states, including California, and specifically honors women who have served in the U.S. military every June.

We also hope you will join us in finding meaningful ways to thank veterans (such as donating, volunteering, and using veteran-owned businesses) today, and every day, for their service to our country.

Sincerely,

Dania Matos, J.D.

To help create an environment that lives up to our Principles of Community, we will send regular messages to acknowledge various heritage months and holidays. While we won't include every month or holiday, we will make an effort to ensure members of our community feel represented. Additionally, news.berkeley.edu will often post articles highlighting people, programs, and research that align with these heritage months and holidays.
