Intermittent Wi-Fi Issues Across Campus

January 24, 2018

To the campus community,

Since Thursday, Jan. 18, many of you have experienced issues with campus Wi-Fi network connections including AirBears2, CalVisitor, and eduroam. We want to assure you that the Infrastructure Services and Telecommunications team is aware of the disruption this is causing and is working diligently to resolve the problem.

Why is this happening?

During periods of high utilization on the Wi-Fi network, a signalling protocol which handles the flow of traffic across the network is experiencing failures. This leads to network traffic flow stopping briefly, and causes Wi-Fi connections to drop across campus since the Wi-Fi equipment is not working as designed. Users will experience a loss of Wi-Fi and will be unable to reach the internet when this occurs.

When will Wi-Fi be working properly again?

We are actively working to resolve the issue, and don’t have an estimate for resolution. The problem was isolated to specific networking equipment yesterday, and we are working with the vendor to troubleshoot the problem and identify a fix.

We appreciate your patience as we work toward a solution. Please check the UC Berkeley Systems Status website for updates on this issue.

Regards,

Larry Conrad, Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and Chief Information Officer
Lyle Nevels, Assistant Vice Chancellor IT and Deputy Chief Information Officer
Dave Browne, Director of Infrastructure Services and Telecommunications
