Great California ShakeOut, October 19

October 18, 2017

Dear Campus Community,

On Thursday, October 19, 2017, the campus will participate in the "Great California ShakeOut,” a day of special events organized to inspire Californians to get ready for major earthquakes and to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.

On October 19 at 10:19 a.m., the campus warning sirens – which signal a “shelter-in-place” condition – will sound and, if convenient, we encourage you to drop, cover, and hold on (we are not asking instructors or students in class to participate in this way). Fire and other building alarms will not beutilized as part of the ShakeOut drill. Impacts to normal campus operations should be minimal.

I encourage you to use the ShakeOut day to enhance your preparedness for any type of emergency. The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has created a free emergency preparedness mobile app that contains Berkeley-specific tips and guidance for a wide range of scenarios, including earthquakes. Please visit the OEM website for download instructions and to access further details regarding campus emergency procedures and resources. I also encourage you to sign-up for urgent text alerts via the WarnMe websiteText messages are the fastest way to get notified during an emergency.

For more information and resources about events on October 19, visit the ShakeOut website

For questions, please contact OEM at oem@berkeley.edu

Sincerely,

Margo Bennett
