Grad Student Nominations Open for New Leadership in Graduate Diversity Award

February 16, 2022

 Graduate Division

Dear Campus Community,

As part of the Graduate Division’s Anti-Racism Initiatives — our promise to change the status quo and move us toward becoming the truly inclusive institution we need to be — we committed to overtly and publicly recognizing the impact individual graduate students make toward this goal.

Today, we’re pleased to announce the launch of the Leadership in Graduate Diversity Awards. Established in direct response to Black graduate students’ requests, the annual awards acknowledge the significant work of graduate students in creating and/or facilitating anti-racism initiatives within their programs or in support of fellow graduate students. The awards are named in honor of two members of the UC Berkeley community — Cynthia Ladd-Viti and Carla Trujillo — who dedicated their UC Berkeley careers and had a profound impact on improving diversity, equity and inclusion across campus.

Two awards of $2500 each will be granted to doctoral or professional school students who graduated in fall 2021 or will be graduating spring or summer 2022.

Candidates may be nominated by faculty, staff or fellow graduate students. Additionally, students may self-nominate with one letter of recommendation. For more information on eligibility, visit the Award webpage.

All nominators must complete this form and include a letter of nomination (PDF). The deadline for 2022 nominations is Thursday, March 31, 2022, 11:59 p.m. PT.

Final selections will be made by a committee comprised of members of UC Berkeley faculty, Graduate Assembly, Graduate Division, and the Office for Graduate Diversity staff and will be announced at the annual Diversity Graduation Celebration in May.

Please join us in recognizing the outstanding graduate students who are reshaping our campus culture.

Sincerely,

Lisa García Bedolla
Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division

Denzil Streete
Chief of Staff & Assistant Dean for Diversity, Graduate Division
