Advocate for and with our Undocumented Students and Community Members

February 13, 2018

Dear campus community,

Over the next three weeks, the U.S. Congress will work to craft a bill that encompasses immigration reform and importantly addresses the fate of those individuals among us who have been protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.

It is critical to raise our voices even louder in support of our students and staff who have endured a long period of uncertainty as immigration policy has been debated and the immigration status of people in our community has been used as a bargaining chip among lawmakers in Washington. DACA is set to expire on March 5, which will result in hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients losing their status and potentially facing deportation. The stress of living in a constant state of limbo and fear continues to take a serious and cumulative toll on the well-being of human beings affected by the insensitivity of this action by some of our elected officials.

Our government relations colleagues have been engaged with the UCSA (UC Student Association) and the CCSA (Cal State Student Association) on joint DACA/Dream Act advocacy. This UC Advocacy Network action page tells how to advocate for comprehensive immigration reform and protection of DACA recipients. We encourage you to tell your own story about how immigration policy affects you and those you care about.

Please join us in broadening our advocacy effort that will unite and empower immigrants all across the country. Let us work together to put important protections into law for our friends and colleagues who are undocumented immigrants and, more importantly, are valued members of our community.

Sincerely,

Oscar Dubon
Vice Chancellor
