Nominations for 2017-18 Regents' Lectureship Program - Due Feb 12th

January 30, 2017

Dear Campus Administrators,

We would like to encourage UC Berkeley chairs, deans, and unit directors to nominate candidates for the 2017-18 Regents’ Lectureships program:

http://vpf.berkeley.edu/faculty-fellowships/regents-lectureship-program

The purpose of this program is to bring to the University distinguished people who have pursued careers in arts, letters, sciences, or business substantially outside the academic profession. This program has been running for over 50 years and has included such luminaries as Jimmy Wales, Yo-Yo Ma, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Sandra Day O’Connor, Steve Reich, Ernst Gombrich, Carrie Mae Weems, Amos Oz, and VS Naipaul. (On the web site provided above you will find access to a fuller listing of past Regents’ Lecturers.)

Regents’ Lecturers’ visits can be for several days or up to two weeks, and they typically include one or more public lectures as well as meetings with students and faculty. Regents’ Lecturers receive a $5,000 honorarium, lodging, and travel expenses. The hosting unit receives up to $1,000 to defray the costs of renting a lecture hall, publicizing the event, and archiving the presentation.

Nominations are due February 12, 2017; the nomination process is not onerous. Each unit may nominate only one candidate, so please coordinate your nomination with the chair, director, or dean of the hosting unit or units. More detailed instructions and the nomination form can be found on the website listed above.

Please direct any inquiries to the program manager, Yasya Goretsky (642-7742, yasyavg@berkeley.edu).

Sincerely yours,

Ben Hermalin, Vice Provost for the Faculty

Ken Goldberg, Chair, Regents’ Lectureships Program
