Jobs at Berkeley

There are many ways to look at the employment landscape at UC Berkeley.  On this page, we try to define some of the most important terms and provide you with links to other web pages that will give you the information you need.

Employment Type:  All employees of UC Berkeley are either academic, staff, or student employees, each with their own policies and regulations.  We are focusing only on nonacademic staff careers in this handbook.  More information on academic or student employment can be found at the websites of the Academic Personnel Office  or the  Student Career Center

Job Classifications:Chapter 3 of the Guide to Managing Human Resources describes the process of  job classification in great detail, from the writing of a job description to the actual process of classification and reclassification.  This is vital information for anyone interested in working toward a job reclassification. The job description and the series concepts need to match in order to achieve a successful reclassification.

Personnel Policies: There is a basic set of policies for UC employees at all campuses, which is called the  Personnel Policies for Staff Members (or PPSM) .  In addition, there are supplemental or revised  Berkeley campus policies and procedures  listed at the Human Resources (HR) website.  But don't think it's that easy!  PPSM policy  does not necessarily apply to you!  If you are in an employee group that is officially represented by a union (known as "exclusively represented"), your employment may still be governed by older staff policies. Ask your supervisor or department HR administrator which policy applies to your job. Employment Plans: Non-covered staff employees belong to one of two plans:  the Management/Senior Professional  (MSP) or Professional and Support Staff (PSS).  Each plan is further subdivided into grades, which are ascending levels of responsibility and salary.   PSS grades
Looking at it another way,  PSS jobs are also split between merit based/open range titles and stepped titles.
